Abstract: This study explores innovations in assessing competency in technical skills within vocational education in Nigeria, examining new methodologies, technologies, and frameworks designed to measure and validate student proficiency in practical and theoretical competencies essential for career readiness. Competency-based assessment focuses on evaluating students' ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world scenarios, fostering skill acquisition, and ensuring alignment with industry standards and workforce demands. The research aims to (1) identify innovative approaches and tools for assessing technical skill competencies in vocational education, (2) assess the effectiveness of competency-based assessment methods in measuring student learning outcomes and performance, and (3) propose recommendations for integrating innovative assessment practices to enhance educational quality, transparency, and accountability in vocational training programs. A survey research design is employed to gather insights from vocational educators, assessment specialists, and industry practitioners familiar with competency-based assessment practices. A sample size of 300 participants will be selected through purposive sampling to represent vocational instructors, assessment experts, and industry partners in Rivers State. Case studies will examine innovative assessment frameworks and their outcomes in improving student learning experiences and employer satisfaction. Findings indicated positive perceptions of competency-based assessment benefits such as skill validation and performance transparency, identified challenges including assessment standardization and technology integration barriers, and highlighted the role of continuous feedback and professional development in optimizing assessment reliability and validity. Recommendations include enhancing assessment infrastructure, integrating digital assessment tools, and fostering collaboration between educators and industry stakeholders to ensure competency-based assessments effectively measure and validate technical skill proficiency in vocational education.
